Drawing Inspiration: Battles
If you’re a writer or even thinking about writing, then you may have faced similar struggles when it comes to inspiration and visualising your story.
These struggles are sometimes referred to as “writer’s block”
Today’s entry focuses on battles and battle scenes. I remember an agonising week, writing and re-writing a battle scene as I had trouble imagining it on an epic scale.
Strangely enough, i was walking my daughter in the pram through Chermside’s parks with huge open areas surrounded by lush green trees.
A strange thing happened. As I was quietly walking her, I started visualising battle scenes in front of my eyes, with the power of imagination. I could imagine Dragons crashing through the trees and lighting up the ground with their firey breath.
I almost felt the ground shake as their gigantic bodies connected with the earth. I looked up and imagined arrows speeding through the skies.
As a result of this experience I got quite sunburnt as I made use of this moment and took a very long walk through the area. But I made progress, and was able to write that scene with such excitement that it was very difficult to keep up with my ideas.
Sometimes it helps to stop trying to “force” yourself to write those sections you are stuck on and focus on something else. It sometimes amazes me what odd times and places will spark the imagination.
